I’ve always enjoyed auto shows although I’m usually just a browser. This year might be different. The prospect of buying a car is looming in the near future since I’ve kept my car long past the time where I can claim that I’m being green.

The auto show displays the industry's latest and greatest

If you’re thinking of buying a car, or you simply enjoy the sight and smell of new autos, mark your calendar to attend the Rochester International Auto Show that runs from March 3 through March 6.  This show offers auto aficionados a chance to see the latest cars to come on the market, to view redesigns of industry favorites and sometimes, to look the future in the headlights.

This year’s show will unveil a number of new models including the the chic gull wing Mercedes-Benz and the Chevrolet VOLT, a plug-in electric car named the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Attendees will also get to see sneak previews of 2012 releases including the Buick Verano, the Buick LaCrosse eAssist, the Chevrolet Sonic, the  Ford Mustang Boss, the Ford Focus and the Mazda 5.

Although I’m sure the sleek and sassy gas guzzling road runners will be popular, my bet is that  green, environmentally-friendly vehicles will be the unsung heroes of the trade show floor.

Speaking of trade show floors, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the RIT SAE Formula Race Car and the ZR1 Corvette, considered the fastest car on the road, clocking in at a swift $111K out of the bank account, according to the automaker’s website.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Department of Motor Vehicles will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ready, willing and able to renew your registration.  By the way, if the kids are coming with you, on both Saturday and Sunday, they’ll have a chance to meet Scooby Doo between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Spikes from the Red Wings from Noon to 2 p.m. and the Red Wings’ Mitsy from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Rochester International Auto Show will be held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center Thursday, March 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, March 4 from 12:00 pm to 10:00 p.m., Saturday, March 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 6  from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission to the show is Adults – $9, Armed Services & Seniors – $6, Children under 12 – $3 and Children under 5 – Free.  The Convention Center is located at 123 East Main Street in Rochester.
